Unveiled VeilsMay 2023

"Behind the veil is the forgotten truth: Women are not canvases, but the painters of their own stories."

Ouyang Xiu’s The Courtyard Deep Deep Deep How Many paints a picture of ancient women confined to the square courtyard, trapped in solitude and boredom. While this was once a reality, the legacy of patriarchal control still lingers in contemporary society. Despite the progress of modern feminism, women continue to be objectified — their bodies still displayed for male pleasure in media, under the predatory gaze of cinema and television.

Through my work, I deconstruct these portrayals of women by male photographers and directors, focusing on the fantasy they project. As a female photographer, I aim to resist this invasive gaze, reinterpreting the female form and narrative.

I also ask: How should we address the pain inflicted by these cultural portrayals? Focusing only on personal distress won't change the fate of women who remain overlooked. But through photography, I hope to give women a platform to express and redefine their unique experiences, not just for my own healing, but for others too.
